My favorite things to see and do in Key West, Florida

I just recently returned from my first real trip to Key West, Florida! It was a very much-needed vacation for my husband and I and we really enjoyed celebrating our first anniversary!

As I have previously mentioned, it was not our favorite place in the world. We are big travelers, so there were a lot of elements that turned us off. But more on that in this post.

Today, I'm going to tell you about my favorite place, activities and moments in Key West!

Cuban Coffee Queen

There is no better way to start your day than with an iced cafe con leche from Cuban Coffee Queen. A lot of people told us about this place before we went and it absolutely did not disappoint. We grabbed a coffee pretty much every day we were there AND brought home some grounds to try and make it ourselves! 

The iced coffee comes served complete with coffee ice cubes and we got ours flavored with caramel, which was delicious. The drink is about half and half coffee and milk with the syrup added and boy is it good. The food was good there as well! I enjoyed the guava bread, but they have plenty of Cubano treats to enjoy!

Butterfly Conservatory

This may have been one of my favorite places I have EVER visited. The Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory is located on the south end on Duvall Street. From the outside, it seems cute, but unassuming, but inside is an entirely different experience. 

You're greeted with a small room teaching you about all of the butterflies of the world and showing you some cocoons, but then is the best part. You walk into the conservatory to hundreds of butterflies flitting around a large greenhouse. 

We saw dozens of different types and some of them even landed on us! (That's good luck, btw). Not only are there tons of beautiful butterflies, but also some really cool birds, turtles and even some flamingos! Just the feeling of having tons of butterflies flying around you is amazing. I honestly can't put it into words, but it's something everyone should experience.

Sunset Celebration

The sunset celebration at Mallory Square is a tradition in Key West, so of course, we had to check it out. It was a bit unsettling because there were a lot of people and, well, coronavirus, but it was a really cool thing to be a part of! 

People gather down by the water to shop from local vendors and artists, see some really cool performances and most importantly, watch the sunset over Sunset Key — a small island right near Key West. It was really a lot of fun! We got a huge pineapple drink to share that was truly a work of art, parked our bums on the dock and watched the sky turn into fire. It was memorable, that's for sure!

Two Friends Patio Restaurant

We got tons of restaurant recommendations, but happened to stumble upon this one on our own and it was by far our favorite! The patio restaurant is located on First Street in the downtown area and was totally up our ally. It was decorated like a tropical hideaway with bamboo and rope accents, tropical plants and even a really cool little waterfall! 

It was super casual, but it was the food and drinks that really sold us. I consider myself a connoisseur of coconut shrimp and this dish was one of the better ones I've had! The fries were also really good and the tropical cocktails were yummy and refreshing!

Also our waiter was so kind and super sweet even though he dropped ketchup on our table haha. But basically, we had to stop ourselves from just going back there to eat multiple times because we wanted to try something new!

Fury Glass Bottom Boat Tour

The glass bottom boat ranks as my second favorite activity behind the Butterfly Conservatory, but it was close call! We booked this one at the last minute after a local recommended it and it was a really cool experience! 

We rode out to the barrier reefs where we saw tons of fish, corals and even a little nurse shark! It was a beautiful day with a clear ocean so we really got to see a lot. Then on the ride back, we had champagne and watched what we could of the sunset. It had started to rain, so the clouds kind of took over, but it was still really nice and a fun time! 

TIP: When it comes to Fury, check in with the salespeople scattered around the island. We were able to get a better price booking through them rather than online!

Wyland Art Gallery

While walking down and exploring Duvall Street, we stumbled upon an art gallery or two, but this one really caught our eye. You've likely heard of the Wyland Whaling Walls, which are all over the world from Myrtle Beach to Hawaii to Japan. I've always loved Robert Wyland's artwork and love of the ocean and his gallery is a wonderful example of that. The employees told us this is one of a few galleries, but that the Key West location is the best. The gallery not only showcases Wyland's work but work from other artist he has specifically curated. Sky and I fell in love with the art of Steve Barton and actually purchased our first fine art piece. 

We are so excited to have it in our home! If you love the beach and the ocean or are just an art lover, I definitely recommend checking this place out, and if you're a serious buyer, the employees are very accommodating and informative. They'll take good care of you.

Five new favorites on my vanity

As a beauty blogger I get to try out a lot of makeup and skincare products, which leads me to find new things I like all the time!

So here are a few things that I find myself grabbing on a regular basis that have just made their way into my routine!

Iconic London Sculpt and Boost Eyebrow Cushion

This is just the first of several on this list that I got in BoxyCharm! I've had this for a hot minute and have used it a few times and liked it, but I was really attached to my Benefit Precisely My Brow Pencil.

I've always liked that pencil but no matter how hard I try, it still makes my brows look somewhat drawn on and not super natural. I don't really need much shaping, just to fill in sparse areas and even things out.

I've also been a long-time fan of the Benefit Gimme Brow but it just doesn't fill in at all, so more often than not, I wind up going in with a pencil anyway to even everything out.

Recently I picked up the Iconic London Sculpt and Boost Eyebrow Cushion (in Medium) again and have fallen in love. Buh bye brow pencil! So let me explain. This kit has two different colors so you can do the front of the brow lighter for a very subtle ombre effect.

It comes with a fold-up spoolie/brush for easy transport and doesn't take up a ton of room in your makeup bag.

What I love the most about this is the fact that I can still draw straight lines to even out the ends of my brows, but then brush the product through for an extremely natural look. But it looks clean, which is what I have been trying to accomplish for a while.

Confession: I HATE DOING MY BROWS. I don't know if that's a common thought or if it's just me, but even my husband knows it's my least favorite part of the day. I didn't even start doing anything to my brows until a few years ago because they were always very full and large-and-in-charge. #PuertoRican. So I'm still learning best practices.

But this product is fairly easy to use and allows for a LOT of user error. If I mess up, I can easily clean it up with my beauty blender. And the more I use it, the more quickly I'm able to get them done!

So if I haven't made it abundantly clear already, I'd definitely recommend it!

Mellow Cosmetics Tinted Brow Gel

Another awesome brow product I've quickly added to my faves is the Mellow Cosmetics Tinted Brow Gel. I have been a die-hard Benefit Gimme Brow gal for a solid five years or so and this gel has just changed the game for me.

I like the Gimme Brow, but I found that it only added a bit of color and kept the hairs in place. But with the Mellow counterpart, I find the color payoff is much better, the gel holds nicely and the best is that it makes my brows look like they're actually filled in, but still natural! Plus, you totally can't beat the price tag!

My only complaint is that the brush is big, so it can be a little messy if you're not careful, but that's so not a deal breaker at all! I'd definitely recommend it to anyone with brows that need a little TLC but don't have a lot of time (or will) to fill them in!

Marc Jacobs O!Mega Bronzer Coconut Perfect Tan

OMG. I have been eyeing this Marc Jacobs bronzer for sooo long and now that I finally have it, I'm in love. I've only been using it for about a week, but the color? Gorgeous. The blend? Amazing. And that packaging? Ughhh so sleek!

I've been a fan of Marc Jacobs makeup for a while, but recently NikkiTutorials has me making a super long list of their products that I REALLY want to try! But I only splurged on this one for now and it was definitely worth it.

It's a fairly large pan, making it easy to swirl your brush in! I like to use a fluffy brush for my bronzer to make it look like a natural glow. This makes it super easy!

The formula of the bronzer itself is by far one of my favorites that I've used. It's really easy to blend and just automatically looks natural and glowy without a lot of effort.

The color is really flattering on me too! It's like, my definition of a perfect bronzer: matte, warm and deep. I'm not super tan but there have been quite a few bronzers that are totally lost on me. Like think, Benefit Hoola Bronzer. One of my other favorites, but when I'm even just a tiny bit tan I really have to pack it on to have any color at all.

So needless to say, I really have been enjoying this one!

REN Clean Skincare Perfect Canvas Clean Primer

I've talked about REN Clean Skincare a few times on here and on my social media, and they continue to deliver! The brand sent me their new Perfect Canvas Clean Primer and I totally dig it!

First off, it smells realllyyyy good. I know that's not necessarily indicative of a good product, but that's really important to me and something that will make me continue to reach for it!

Besides that, it goes on smooth, feels hydrating and makes for a nice base for any foundation. It definitely is good for the skin and makes your makeup stay longer.

Another cool thing about this product is that you can also wear it on it's own to just give your skin a nice, healthy glow!

Kiko Milano Ocean Feel Translucent Loose Powder

Oh.my.God. So this entire collection has highly impressed me, but I'll save that for another post. This Kiko Milano Ocean Feel Loose Powder in particular has really changed my makeup life.

In recent past, I have been riding the MAJOR struggle bus with dry skin. I use every hydrating, moisturizing product known to man and still can't quite figure out why every foundation/powder combo I use STILL makes my skin look really dry. The weirdest part is though, when I don't have any makeup on it looks really healthy and dewy and well hydrated. So I've been at a loss.

Enter this powder. When I tell you it's the ONLY one I've tried that does my skin any justice, I'm not exaggerating. I've tried it now with a few different foundations that I use regularly and it just gives my face an airbrushed, perfected finish WITHOUT totally drying me out.

Also impressing is the price! It's only $16 and totally worth it. I also really like the packaging. It's almost identical to the Becca Hydra-Mist Set & Refresh Powder loose powder, which is more than double the price!

Now I know some of you would say, "why use powder at all?" Well, I cannot STAND the sticky feeling of unset foundation and concealer, so THAT is why I still insist on setting it with powder.

Another trend I've noticed is these cold shoulder tops. Again, I am on a never ending hunt for one of these or even a dress with that same cut! I'm actually addicted to this IG account. Heather Chapman is a freakin' hair GENIUS! Like I can only hope that one day I might be able to make my hair slightly resemble the things that she comes up with. Just by looking at the date on this one, you can tell that I frequently stalk Diamond Head Beach House and it's sister store Rebecca Beach. They are based in Hawaii and I may have liked almost every picture they have both posted. They carry really awesome brands and always put together outfits that I later try to recreate with what is in my closet, usually to no avail. It is my dream to be able to just buy every outfit they come up with and wear them forever. Aloha Beaches.

A Few of My NEW Favorite Things!

Over the course of a few months, I tend to accumulate new things in my beauty bag.  Some are samples, others are things I picked up on a whim.  Without further ado, here are a few of my NEW favorite things!

NKD SKN Gradual Tanning Lotion

In the summer time, I normally have a glorious tan.  My Puerto Rican skin sucks in the sun and allows me to get a sweet glow.  However, I am also half German so as soon as summer ends my tan slowly starts to fade.  By the time January/February rolls around I am a nice pasty white (for me) and it's pretty depressing.  I've tried tanning beds, which are horrible for you, and I'm strongly against spray tans because #cheeto.  So I had been on the hunt for a good self-tanner.  Alas, I did my research and found the NKD SKN brand.  They have several different kinds of self tanner, but I opted for the gradual tanning lotion.  I have to say I am super pleased with it!  It's easy to apply, goes on clear, and starts to show color within the first couple applications! My only advice would be to make sure you are super aware of the amount you put on your knees, elbows and hands.  If you put too much on your joints they'll start to get a little orange.  But I feel like all self-tanners have that issue, haha.  Overall, I give it five stars! Oh, and I also recommend using a mitt, just in case.  I got this one from ULTA!

Too Faced Le Grand Palais

My mom and I got this to share when it came out at Christmas time.  Needless to say, I've kind of hi-jacked it.  This kit has it all, but I want to focus on the pallet and the mascara.  I am obsessed with this pallet because it has everything.  Sparkly shadows, matte shadows, and the perfect base and highlight colors!  It also has a bronzer, highligher, and two blush colors that are all seriously to die for.  Honestly, I didn't expect my favorite thing about this pallet to be the highlighter, but I now use it every day.  It gives my cheek bones that perfect pop! Also, all the colors are great and the shadows have the perfect amount of pigment to really blend for a nice smoky look! I could go on about it for days, but instead I'll move on to the mascara.

Better Than Sex Mascara.  I'd been told of the magic that is this mascara, but was  always afraid to drop the dollars without getting to try it first.  So when I got a full size tube in the kit, I was super excited to take it for a spin! Let me tell you, this is probably the best mascara I've ever tried.  I absolutely love it.  Talk about big lashes, mine look like huge falsies when I wear this mascara!  I can't even explain the sheer greatness of it.  Like, I'll just wear this mascara with no shadow and no liner and look fab.  

Urban Decay Naked Skin Foundation

I really like this foundation!  I don't typically wear foundation unless I'm planning on doing a full face of makeup for some special reason.  But what I like about the Naked Skin Foundation is the lightweight feel with a good amount of coverage.  I'd say it gives a medium coverage, but you really don't feel like you're wearing anything! Awesome for every day!

Nao Bay Oxygenating Cream Moisturizer

I got this originally as a sample in one of my Birchboxes and fell in love! I'd been in need of a new face moisturizer, so I splurged and bought the full sized bottle.  I love it because it smells ah-mazing, feels great on my skin and works great under makeup!  Plus it's organic! And, how cute is the packaging?!

Batiste Dry Shampoo Dark & Deep Brown

As you know, I am an avid dry shampoo user and connoisseur.  I'd heard a lot of good things about Batiste and had been wanting to try it, but it was my friend's recommendation that made me go and try it for myself!  I chose to try the dark & deep brown version, since I'm always worried I'm going to miss a spot and have a streak of grey hair left over!  I really like this dry shampoo!  It doesn't have that powder smell (that I hate) and is a lot closer to the color of my hair.  It also does a great job getting rid of the unwanted greasy roots and give me a little extra volume!

ULTA Dual Action Cleansing System

I'd seen a lot about different facial brushes and really wanted to try one.  Again, was not about dropping $50+ on something I knew nothing about.  So I went on the hunt for one that was more reasonable.  The ULTA brand system works great!  I love using it to exfoliate and whenever I feel like I need a deeper clean.  It's also helped a lot with clearing up my blackheads. It's super easy to use and comes with two heads: a brush and a sponge for moisturizing.  I've yet to try the latter, so I'll have to update on that one later!  Overall, it was absolutely worth the $25.  Now, I will say this provides a pretty gentle cleanse, so if you're looking for something a little more intense or that has more features then you might want to splurge a little. But if you just want something for every day use, this one is the bee's knees! 

New to My Makeup Bag

Recently I've had quite a few new additions to my makeup bag, or I should say something more along the lines of my makeup suitcase.  I've even taken to buying and building my own set of "Alex" inspired drawers, what has proven very helpful.  But I digress.  I've bought a few new things and received a few new things that I feel are very much worth talking about! So please help me in welcoming the newest additions to my makeup family!

Stila Got Inked Cushion Eyeliner in Smokey Quartz

I've only gotten to wear this twice and I already love it!  The color is just epic, there are no other words to describe it.  In general, I tend to keep with the blackest of black liquid liners, because the brown shades I've used are just not bold enough to even bother with.  As all beauty gurus know well, liquid eyeliner is an art, so using a color that is too light to even see is just silly.  Anyway, this smokey quartz color gets the perfect medium.  It's dark enough to show up on my tan skin, yet the brown metallic shades enhance my blue eyes without such a harsh outline.  It really is lovely.  Also, it looks great with just about any combo of eyeshadows and works in any season!  Now the cushion part of this product is also really cool.  It makes the liner very versatile since you have a lot of control over the amount of product you put on the brush.  I'm still getting used to it, but so far it has proven itself worthy to become a part of my regular beauty routine! Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick in Rapture

I'm in love with this lipstick.  I received it in a prize pack that I won at a Twitter party I attended last month with Urban Decay and Conde Nast Sway!  Thanks so much to them, it was a great time and I love everything I got!  Anyway, the UD Revolution Lipstick has been on my "to try" list for a while, so I was super excited to get this one.  I loved the color in the tube, but I was a little hesitant since I don't usually don the darker lips.  However, this color is beautiful! Like, I honestly almost feel like it was made for me.  Similar to what I loved about the smokey quartz color, the Rapture shade hit that happy medium for me.  Not too dark, but just dark enough to make a statement.  It's also super smooth going on and had a nice staying power!  Although I wouldn't know much about that, since I'm usually eating something every couple hours or so, lol.  All in all, I really like this lipstick and I'll probably buy another one soon! Find it here!

Nars Blush in Orgasm

I've had this one for a month or so now, but I'd been eyeing this cult classic for a while.  Nars being a little more on the pricey side, I'd been waiting until I had a little extra mula to blow.  But then when I went to get it my mom decided she wanted to buy it for me anyway. SMH. She spoils me, I swear.  But thanks Mom, because this is now my go to blush!   Not only does the name make me giggle like a middle schooler, but the color is to die for.  I'm a sucker for coral/peach based blush and this one has that plus just the right amount of sparkle.  Sold.  I definitely see why it's considered a cult classic and I'm sure I will buy it again once I finish it!  Find it here!


Tarte Power Pigment Lip Tint in True Love

I got this lip crayon around the same time I got the Nars blush, and it has become one of my go to lip colors for summer!  It's a pretty watermelon/coral color and looks fresh and juicy on the lips!  The formula is great because it gives a sheer effect and a nice shine but with the pigment of a lipstick!  It also has a slight minty tingle when you put it on which is pretty awesome.  And it has great staying power!  I tested it and it stayed on for several hours even after drinking and munching on some candy.  I looked in the mirror and was like, "Hey! My lipstick is still on!"  It wasn't quite as pigmented but it still looked great!  I also have recently fallen in love with lip crayons.  I just like the ease of use and I find it easier to put on because of my familiarity with drawing.  :)  Find it here!

W3ll People The Expressionist Mascara

I got this amazing mascara in my May Birchbox, but it has become a part of my regular makeup routine.  There is just something about it that I love!  It gives a natural look but still the ever desired volume!  I love the way it looks and bonus, it's organic!! I'm saddened by the fact that my sample size is almost used up, but it's reasonably priced so I'll probably buy a full sized one! Find it here!

Ulta Buffing Brush

So for a while now I've seen other beauty bloggers and vloggers using this type of brush for their foundation.  I'd sit in awe as I watched them buff their flaws into oblivion and turn out a perfect, airbrushed look in seconds.  I have tried my hands, a flat foundation brush, beauty blenders, the works and nothing made my foundation look as flawless as this buffing brush.  I don't understand the science side of this, but boy does it work.  No streaks, no redness, just nearly perfect skin.  I will say I'm still in the learning stages of brush use and have yet to get on the outrageously priced brushes bandwagon, but this Ulta brand brush worked just fine for me and only put me out about $12.  Which IMO is still a lot for a brush, but in this case it was totally worth it!  Find it here!

First let me start by apologizing for my absence.  As I'm sure many of you know, summer is a busy time and busy means less blogging!  But I've got a few awesome post ideas in the works so at least we have that to look forward to!

Shark Week!

Hurray for Shark Week!  Today marks the beginning of the 2014 Shark Week on Discovery Channel!  If you hadn't figured it out already, I love sharks and I love Shark Week.  I've been a shark aficionado for a very long time and always love anything ocean related.  But there is nothing like Shark Week.

Once a year, shark lovers from all over the country come together for a week full of new discoveries, stories, technological developments, and bad jokes about sharks.  And we eat it up.  No pun intended. Hah.  Anyway, there are tons of other things you can do to celebrate this joyous event besides just watching the shows.  You can host a party, dabble in a drinking game, or deck yourself out in shark-inspired apparel!  So I'm going to show you my favorite Shark Week inspired pins!

1. Nailed it.

Who doesn't love fun nail art?!  Well I found probably the cutest little nail sharks you've ever seen!  I've seen a few variations on this one, but this was by far my favorite! A great way to show your sharks some love and have adorable nails at the same time!  It's a win-win!

2.  Drinking Games...

Every good movie, TV show, or in this case television even has a drinking game.  Even Sharknado week had it's own drinking game, which I unfortunately did not have the joy in participating in.  However, I did watch the second one and it was just as ridiculous and hilarious as the first!  So if you haven't seen them yet, I don't know what you're waiting for! But I digress.  Many people have made their own variations on the classic Shark Week drinking game over the years, but they all have the same basic rules.  So feel free to change the scale based on how much you want to drink and if you want to survive the week.  Since honestly, once a shark jumps in the air in slow motion, you're pretty screwed.

3. ...And the Drinks to go with Them

You've gotta have some good, shark themed drinks to go with your drinking game!  So here are a couple of recipes I'm planning to try.  Feel free to make the non-alcoholic version for your boring, sober friend or if you're watching with the kiddos.

 

4.  Sharky Gear

How better to celebrate than with awesome gear! Grab a t-shirt, shoes, or even these awesome leggings from ModCloth!  Also, the Discovery Channel store has some awesome official Shark Week gear and more ridiculous things you will feel the need to purchase.  Or pull out any shark related things you already have!  I have a hat and a backpack!

 

5.  Comedy Shark

Shark Week viewers love Shark Week humor.  And general shark humor is funny too.  Make sure you pin some funny jokes to share with your friends at your viewing party!  Nothing is funnier than a misunderstood shark joke.  Nothing.

 

6.  Party Time!

A Shark Week party needs everything shark themed!  From plates to souvenirs, no matter how many people you have over there is a party style for you!  You can even find printable party gear!  Here are a few of my favorite party pins!
